New York City based Freelance Photojournalist, JB Reed and I got a chance to chat a little bit about the website he recently launched with a college-mate called ShowTheSpill.com.

The website, though simple, is set up to showcase BP’s live cam that is pointed directly at the wellhead. Originally, Reed says, the website was set up with the intention of having people project the image for others to see, but the main goal has evolved into simply putting eyes on the image. “On Meet the Press one morning, one of the guests was calling this the image of the year, so I thought, this is an important image to have out there,” said Reed of the image, “It’s such an unbelievable image, an image type that we’ve never had access to before.”

Today, ShowTheSpill.com has more than 1600 unique visits, but as the oil continues to plume from the well’s head, their hits are expected to continue to grow.

In Texas, the streaming video was the background to an interpretive dance. http://www.youtube.com/jostonedance

If you’re in New York, 25CPW will be projecting the image this week, possibly starting tomorrow night (June 15), otherwise, find someone to donate a projector for the night and go to town with this, literally.

Last night, Colbert, with the help of Bing.com, donated $100,000 to a newly formed foundation called “The Colbert Nation Gulf of America Fund”. The Cumberland River, which runs straight through downtown, is not expected to crest until tomorrow evening.

The area is rife with non-profits that are ready to lend a helping hand, but don’t underestimate the help that you can give. Here is a list of organizations that you can help right now, no matter where you are.

During a community crisis in Nashville, Second Harvest would help in the coordination of basic food items to areas that need it.

And of course, the local American Red Cross, which has opened numerous shelters in the area. The shelters open this evening are as follows:

Hi All,

As many of you know, our latest love project is centered around helping a non-federally recognized group of Native American’s living on the small Isle de Jean Charles off the Louisiana Gulf Coast. For decades it was thought that the end of their way of life would come via a hurricane or the steady erosion that continues to eat away at the fragile coastline. With one of the largest oil spills in US history making landfall, a new challenge needs to be met.

Today it is with great urgency that we ask you to step to the plate and start swinging. The New York Times, along with a number of other news organizations has begun reporting that the oil has made landfall. We believe that it is our responsibility as human beings do to whatever we can to blunt this horrible disaster. As with most disasters of this magnitude, individuals can be left feeling helpless. What can one person do in the face of such an astronomical challenge? The answer to this question can sometimes, in part, be easier than you think. Along with what is sure to be a great insurgence of non-profits to the area (we’ll post a list of organizations you can help as we find out about them), one has a eco-sustainable way to help clean up the to-be blackened coastline. Matter of Trust is a non-profit organization that is using hair to help clean up oil spills. That’s right, hair! We’ve all got it, some more than others (tear), and we can all help out their organization by simply cutting off the lovely locks that frame our beautiful faces to help clean up a coastline, help save an ecosystem, and an ocean based economy that generates more than $230 Billion dollars in revenue yearly.

Go to their website, check it out. If you don’t have any hair to donate like John and I, you can always send a little money. Anything can help.

We cannot afford to lose this delicate area of our great country.

Humbly yours,

Grant & John

The earth shook and people screamed as their shoddily constructed world came crashing down around them. Haiti, population 8,528,000, which is approximately the size of Maryland, has long been considered the third world, but for those who have visited, Haiti is a step above. Recently, on the USA Today website actor Rainn Wilson did a video blog about his recent trip to Haiti. He praised the pride that the natives had for things like the clothes that their school children wore to school. Which he, an American, deemed, “spotless”.

Yesterday, the place that Mr Wilson described so eloquently changed forever. An initial magnitude 7.0 earthquake sent the countries’ homes of the rich and the impoverished alike tumbling to the ground. Today reports of thousands losing their lives float loftily in the air.

Along with other world leaders, President Barack Obama pledged aid to the earth-torn country, but government is not enough. Below are links to private and federally funded organizations alike that are aimed at helping save lives.
